OVERVIEW

Delve into the history of Cape Breton Island by browsing a heritage museum with a special emphasis on Guglielmo Marconi, who received the world’s first transatlantic radio messages from there. You will see the isolated spot above a sea cliff where Marconi set up his research and transmission facility in the early 1900s. The footprints of two original telegraph towers and the foundation walls of his receiving room and powerhouse still remain. This National Historic Site pays tribute to Marconi’s pioneering wireless communication achievements as do the exhibits in the Glace Bay Heritage Museum, which is housed in the Old Town Hall. There you will delve even deeper into the life and times of the Italian-born Marconi and discover other historical aspects of Sydney. Displays showcase the heyday of the local swordfish industry in the 1940s, the boom in coal mining and how daily life on Cape Breton has evolved over time.

Note: This tour includes a moderate amount of walking mainly at the guest's discretion. Tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Tour sensitive to weather conditions. Venues and menus may vary due to operational issues (availability upon arrival, seasonal produce, etc.). The Marconi site remains open only until Labour Day in Canada (September 2, 2024). After that date, the Marconi National Historic Site visit will be off-site only. Visitors will be able to appreciate the exact location of the first broadcast, as well as the enchanting views of Cape Cod. Old Town Hall Museum is available Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays.
